Talking it Out

Sometimes, it doesn’t take a big action from NTEU to get a big result.

This was the case recently at NTEU Chapter 335 (CFPB), when a member asked a steward for help dealing with a manager who denied a telework request. Instead of filing a grievance, the NTEU steward asked to first sit down and speak with management about the issue.

The meeting had a positive tone, with the steward reminding management of the telework policy in the NTEU-negotiated contract. Management responded that it would reexamine the issues, and within days the NTEU member had a signed telework agreement.

One of the reasons for this positive resolution is because NTEU stewards get topnotch training each year on the gamut of workplace issues. This is why they know how to deftly handle a variety of situations.

This story also offers an important reminder for NTEU members—solving a workplace problem doesn’t always have to be uncomfortable or confrontational. Your NTEU steward is there to help facilitate conversations with management that can lead to big changes—without having to be a big deal.
