Oscar Time for Federal Employees

SAMMIES Banner

Something happened in Washington this week that should occur more often. Federal employees were honored for their strong commitment to public service and significant contributions in their fields.

The Sammies, known as the “Oscars” of public service, were handed out at a gala earlier this week to a group of exceptional federal employees who defend our country, protect the environment, ensure public safety and make scientific discoveries that improve our lives. I was proud not only to attend, but to also serve as a member of the awards selection committee, along with national leaders from diverse backgrounds. It was no easy task to select the eight award winners from an impressive 32 finalists and more than 350 nominees.

While watching these federal employees be recognized for their outstanding work, I couldn’t help but think of our union members around the country who do amazing things at work each day and dedicate their lives to public service. You do your work quietly, day-in and day-out, and your accomplishments are not celebrated at a gala event. But your work is critically important and essential to the well-being of our country, and I offer my deepest appreciation for your contributions.
