Hatch Act Questions? Reardon Has Answers

With Election Day less than a month away and early voting underway in some states, you might be moved to get involved or to simply express an opinion about a candidate. But you have questions about the Hatch Act, which guides the political activities of federal employees.

To help answer these questions, National President Tony Reardon is tackling Hatch Act basics in his latest guest column on GovLoop.com. Thanks to Hatch Act reforms NTEU successfully fought for, there are a lot of options for federal employees who want to show their support for a candidate or party.

For example, Reardon points out that federal employees can “friend” or “like” a candidate’s Facebook page, or post a candidate sign in their front yards.

Be advised, however, that there are restrictions when employees are on duty. For example, federal employees can’t express opinions about a candidate or wear political buttons at work.

For a listing of do’s and don’ts to get you through the election season, read President Reardon’s column.
