What Could Your Pay Raise Be?

Question Marks

It ain't over 'til it's over.

Yogi Berra said it about baseball, but it could also apply to the 2017 pay raise.

Last month, Congress approved a 2.1 percent pay raise for the military next year, and the administration sent an alternative pay plan outlining a 1.6 percent increase for civilian federal employees. NTEU saw an opportunity to continue its push for pay parity and took action.

The union reached out to our supporters in Congress and, with their help, made our case for a 2.1 percent increase for federal employees and we got results.

With just a few weeks until the new year, the administration issued a new pay plan providing a 2.1 percent increase for civilian employees, establishing parity between civilian and military pay raises.

So, what does this mean for your wallet? Here are some things to know:

  • The newer alternative pay plan for locality pay increased the average locality pay rate for 2017 from the previous 0.6 percent to 1.1 percent. The across-the-board pay raise will continue to be 1 percent translating to an average cumulative pay raise of 2.1 percent.

  • The 1.1 percent locality pay figure is an average number, meaning some areas would receive locality pay increases below this figure, while others would receive slightly more.

The chart below outlines the expected 2017 cumulative pay raise percentages (across-the-board plus locality pay).  The final pay tables for each designated locality pay area and “rest of U.S.” (RUS) will be released later this month by the Office of Personnel Management.
