NTEU Speaks Out Against Hiring Freeze

National President Tony Reardon talks about the toll of a federal hiring freeze on local communities in an interview Tuesday with a Baltimore CBS affiliate. Reardon, a resident of Maryland, worries about how the freeze will affect his home state.

“It’s going to impact my neighbors. It’s going to impact my family,” said Reardon, adding that cuts to agency staffing and resources could harm the local economy in Maryland, home to 130,00 federal employees. A federal hiring freeze would also harm the American public.

“If agencies cannot provide the services that Americans need, that’s a problem,” added Reardon. He pointed to the Internal Revenue Service, which is facing the start of the tax filing season with more than 20,000 fewer employees from six years ago.

NTEU strongly opposes this hiring freeze and is working with supporters and others to minimize its impact.
