Going on the Record on IRS Budget

With tax reform making headlines everywhere, NTEU is ensuring that the perspective of the IRS employees who must implement the overhaul doesn’t get left out of the story.

I made it my priority last week to speak with reporters about the dire need to fund the IRS, now tasked with interpreting and implementing hundreds of pages of changes to the tax code. The agency faces this monumental work—on top of its everyday workload and preparing for the upcoming tax filing season— with a reduced budget and workforce that has been decimated in recent years due to budget cuts.

The detrimental impact of IRS budget cuts is hardly a new story to NTEU. It’s an issue I’ve testified on before Congress numerous times, wrote dozens of letters to lawmakers and been outspoken about in the media. But now that tax reform has been signed into law, continuing years of severe cuts to IRS funding—as Congress calls for in its fiscal 2018 funding bills—will come with serious consequences and the potential for significant problems. I took this message to the New York Times, National Public Radio, FedWeek, Federal News Radio, GovExec and other media outlets last week.

No doubt, these are critical times for IRS employees. You can count on me to keep telling your story, and when Congress returns after the new year to debate funding for the rest of fiscal 2018, you can count on NTEU to be on the forefront calling for the funding you need to do your jobs successfully.

Thank you for everything you do for America’s taxpayers.
