Flu Shots Still Advisable—And Free Under FEHBP

Medical Symbols

This has been one of the worst flu seasons in years, but it’s not too late to get your flu shot. While flu activity may have peaked in some parts of the country, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that we are halfway through the flu season, and flu activity can last as late as May.

The good news for federal employees is that most plans under the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program cover flu shots with no copays when in-network. Use your ZIP code to find a nearby location to get your flu shot, and call ahead of time to make sure the flu vaccine is available as some providers are reporting shortages. Also, be sure to always ask about full coverage before receiving care.

The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months and older. While the vaccine can't protect against all cases of influenza, if you do get flu, it can make your illness milder.
