Senate Clears Back Pay Bill

The Senate has approved a bill that provides back pay for any furloughed federal employees should there be a government shutdown. NTEU strongly supported this bill and thanks Sens. Cardin and Van Hollen for their work on this. Similar legislation is pending in the House.

Today, the Senate has been unable to advance yesterday’s House-passed CR that would keep these agencies funded through Feb. 8 at current funding levels plus the president’s requested $5 billion for border wall procurement and construction funds.

Negotiations are ongoing between the White House and Congress; however, the deadline for a lapse in appropriations for these agencies is midnight tonight. Late Friday afternoon, Senate Majority Leader McConnell and Minority Leader Schumer announced that there is agreement to find an agreement and that the next bill that comes to the Senate floor for consideration must be agreed to in advance by the White House and both chambers’ congressional leaders.
