NTEU Urges Quick Passage of Paid Family Leave

NTEU sent a letter yesterday to the chair of a key house committee pressing for the quick passage of the Federal Employee Paid Leave Act, which would give federal employees up to 12 weeks of paid leave to care for a new child, a sick relative or a serious personal medical condition.

“No employee should be forced to choose between a paycheck and caring for their family,” wrote President Reardon to House Oversight and Reform Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-MD), who is also a cosponsor of the bill. “The Federal Employee Paid Leave Act will also help our federal government recruit and retain dedicated and talented workers.”

Currently, federal workers do not have any guarantee of paid leave for bringing a new child into the family and existing federal employee leave policies may not provide adequate paid leave to care for a critically ill family member. The legislation would guarantee 12 weeks of paid family leave for federal employees for all instances covered by the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA).

NTEU’s long record of support for paid family leave continued last week when Reardon joined the lead sponsor of the Federal Employee Paid Leave Act, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), and other members of Congress at a news conference on Capitol Hill announcing the legislation.
