Plan to Complete Your 2020 Census? Here’s Why You Should

In the midst of the global pandemic, completing your census form may not be at top of your to-do list. But here’s why your answers are even more important now.

The results of the 2020 census will help determine how hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funding flow into communities every year for the next decade. That includes how funding is allocated to more than 100 programs, including Medicaid, Head Start, block grants for community mental health services, and the Supplemental Assistance Program, also known as SNAP. It also helps communities respond to natural disasters and other crises, and allocates funding for hospitals and fire departments.

Additionally, the results of the census determine the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives and are used to draw congressional and state legislative districts.

It’s not too late to complete your 2020 census form. The deadline for self-responses (online, phone, and mailed-in) has been extended to Oct. 31 due to the pandemic.

The census counts everyone living in the United States and its five territories; Puerto Rico, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
