House Approves Use or Lose Leave Carryover

Yesterday the House of Representatives approved the defense authorization bill that contains NTEU-supported language allowing federal employees to carry over an additional 60 hours of earned annual leave.

For most employees, that means the maximum number of hours that can be carried over into 2021 increases to 300.

This is important recognition that employees have been hard at work throughout the pandemic and should not have to sacrifice their earned leave. The Senate is expected to vote on the bill this week.

President Trump has threatened to veto the legislation for reasons unrelated to the leave provision. The bill is considered a must-pass piece of legislation and it may set up votes to override a presidential veto.

Work continues on the funding bill and the House has scheduled a vote for Wednesday afternoon on a one-week extension of the continuing resolution to give lawmakers additional time in finalizing the omnibus. The current CR expires on Friday and the extension would fund the government through Dec. 18. The Senate is expected to take up the one-week CR following House approval.

NTEU is working with supporters in Congress to push for adequate funding for federal agencies and a fair pay increase for federal employees. Failure to reach an agreement could result in a full or partial year CR or another shutdown. Contact your members of Congress today to request adequate full-year funding for federal agencies and a fair pay raise for federal employees.
