Legislation Introduced To Expand Public Service Loan Forgiveness

NTEU is supporting bipartisan legislation that would help former and retired federal employees and other public servants get student loan debt relief.

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Payment Completion Fairness Act would eliminate the requirement that borrowers be employed in public service at the time of forgiveness.

Currently, retired federal employees and those who left public service but made 120 qualifying payments and served for 10 years are not eligible for loan forgiveness.

The bill was reintroduced by Sens. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and Mike Braun (R-IN), and Reps. Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA).

NTEU’s support for this legislation is in addition to our efforts to win student loan forgiveness through collective bargaining and by working with the administration to make improvements to the PSLF program by executive action.
