A new analysis of the federal workforce provides a striking picture of who you are and what makes the federal civil service a critical institution in our country.
Here are some key demographic findings from the analysis (all based on 2023 data from OPM):

Although the federal workforce skews older, 25 percent of new hires in 2023 were under the age of 30 while 55 percent were ages 30 to 49.

53.8 percent of federal employees have bachelor’s degrees or advanced degrees while that number in the overall U.S. labor force is only 40.4 percent.

Veterans continue to serve as federal employees: 30 percent of the federal workforce are veterans while they make up only 5 percent of the U.S. labor force. Additionally, 25 percent of new federal employee hires in 2023 were veterans.

40 percent of federal employees identify as a racial or ethnic minority compared to 24 percent of the U.S. labor force.
