Taxpayers experienced better service, more timely refunds and shorter wait times from the IRS last year, according to an internal watchdog report, a testament to the hard work of frontline employees and an investment in the agency.
The National Taxpayer Advocate’s annual report to Congress said the IRS also made major strides toward improving its information technology systems while expanding in-person help at its Taxpayer Assistance Centers by adding evening and weekend service in many locations.
After a decade of budget and staffing cuts, the IRS was able to begin rebuilding and modernizing thanks to a funding infusion by the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. The report emphasizes the need for Congress to provide adequate funding to allow the IRS to continue upgrading its systems and improving taxpayer services and compliance rates.
