Customs Professionals Vote For NTEU Representation; Treasury Union Now Includes Entire Agency Bargaining Unit

Press Release February 21, 2001

Washington, D.C.—With a successful organizing election among 230 professional employees of the Customs Service, the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) now is the exclusive representative for all bargaining unit employees in Customs.

The newest Customs employees to be represented are regulatory auditors, chemists and textile analysts who work in Customs facilities around the country. They voted in a Federal Labor Relations Authority-supervised election, by a 77 to 29 vote, in favor of NTEU representation.

“I’m delighted to welcome these Customs employees to NTEU representation, and to see that they recognize the value to be found in NTEU representation” said NTEU President Colleen M. Kelley. She added that she was pleased that, “just as in the Internal Revenue Service, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Securities & Exchange Commission and a number of other agencies, NTEU now is the exclusive representative for all bargaining unit employees.”

NTEU represents nearly 12,000 Customs employees nationwide. Those involved in this most recent election made up the last professional segment of Customs that was not included in the bargaining unit. Overall, NTEU is the largest independent federal union, representing some 150,000 employees in 25 agencies and departments.
