House Resolution Supporting Federal Employees a Welcome Change, Kelley Says

Press Release June 11, 2012

Washington, D.C.—The president of the nation’s largest independent union of federal employees today applauded introduction by Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) of a House resolution honoring the federal workforce for its many ongoing contributions to the well-being of our nation.

“This resolution is timely and well-deserved recognition of the day in, day out service to the public performed by the members of the federal workforce,” said President Colleen M. Kelley of the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU).

“It is, as well, a welcome and refreshing change from the continuing drumbeat of unfair attacks on the pay, benefits and commitment of these dedicated and skilled workers that has come from some members of Congress,” the NTEU leader added.

H. Res. 682 details at some length the multiple and varied work responsibilities undertaken by federal employees, including protecting national security; performing vital research and other scientific work; ensuring critically-important payments under Social Security and other programs; and much more.

The resolution commends the “tireless and extensive efforts” of federal employees and emphasizes “the benefits they bring to the public welfare, to the progress of democracy, and to the United States as a whole.”

The resolution has been referred to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. President Kelley called for its quick approval in committee and resulting passage of the full House.

“I appreciate Congresswoman Norton’s steady support of the federal workforce and her efforts in drawing attention to the daily positive contributions of federal employees. She truly understands and appreciates the value that federal workers bring to our country,” Kelley said.

As the largest independent federal union, NTEU represents 150,000 employees in 31 agencies and departments.
