Kelley Statement on Sheila Bair as Possible Nominee as Chairman of the FDIC

Press Release May 2, 2006

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) is one of the nation’s key financial regulatory agencies. As such, it requires as its chairman a person with wide-ranging experience in financial matters and who appreciates and respects the importance of responsible government regulation. Yesterday the president announced his intention to nominate Sheila Bair as head of the FDIC. If nominated, her views on the need for a high-quality workforce—a workforce respected for its efforts and professionalism; appropriately compensated; and with working conditions conducive to allowing and encouraging them to provide the kind of quality service the American people want and deserve would be particularly interesting. NTEU has had certain issues with the FDIC in the past over its approach to its employees. I look forward to examining Ms. Bair’s record and to working with the Senate Banking Committee if her nomination moves forward.
