Kelley Statement On the Appointment of Rob Portman as Director of OMB

Press Release April 18, 2006

While the National Treasury Employees Union has had policy disagreements with Rob Portman, newly-nominated as director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), we have worked with the nominee on important issues in the past. As a former member of the House Ways and Means Committee, then-Rep. Portman worked with NTEU during the restructuring of the Internal Revenue Service in 1998. NTEU differed with him in his role as a member of a House Select Committee dealing with creation of the Department of Homeland Security. We made known our differences at that time, and since then through our determined and thus far successful legal actions against the department’s regressive personnel rules. I do not expect the Portman appointment to result in significant policy changes—with which we disagree—within OMB and the administration, but I remain ready to work with him on issues of concern to the federal workforce and the nation.
