NTEU Says IRS Must Have Sufficient Budget To Fund Its Massive Restructuring Effort

Press Release February 24, 1999

Washington, D.C.--The head of the union representing employees of the Internal Revenue Service today added his support to a call for sufficient resources for the agency to pursue its most far-reaching restructuring in nearly half-a-century.

President Robert M. Tobias of the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) said he supports the views of IRS Commissioner Charles O. Rossotti that the agency restructuring called for in 1998 legislation is on track, but requires adequate funding over the long term to ensure that it accomplishes the intended results.

Rossotti presented testimony today to the House Treasury, Postal and General Government Subcommittee on the administration's fiscal year 2000 budget proposal calling for $8.1 billion for the IRS, including $140 million devoted to the restructuring effort.

NTEU, which represents more than 97,000 IRS employees, "has front-line employees working diligently with their management counterparts every single day to bring to fruition the vision of a customer service-oriented agency that meets its revenue-collection mission," Tobias said, and "they understand that you can't transform this critical agency unless you provide it with adequate funds."
