NTEU Strongly Endorses Rep. Hoyer’s Re-Election; Kelley Calls Him “A Champion For Federal Employees”

Press Release October 25, 2002

Washington, D.C.—Calling him “a champion for federal employees” who has served his constituents with “dedication, determination, character and heart,” the leader of the nation’s largest independent union of federal employees today strongly endorsed the re-election bid of Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD).

President Colleen M. Kelley of the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) said “there is no stronger voice in the House of Representatives for federal employees” than the 11-term Maryland Democrat.

The NTEU leader ran down a long list of Hoyer accomplishments on behalf of federal employees—including leading the fight for fair pay increases; working to see that federal workers and their agencies have the resources they need; seeking to increase the government’s share of federal employees’ health care costs; fighting moves to contract out work to the private sector; seeking to preserve civil service rights for employees in a new Department of Homeland Security; and more.

“Steny has stood up to those who have tried to demean and disrespect federal employees and their dedication to the work they do 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,” President Kelley said. “Steny is always there for federal employees, and for that we are extremely grateful.”

As the largest independent federal union, NTEU represents some 150,000 employees in 27 agencies and departments.
