Washington, D.C.—NTEU will match—dollar for dollar—money donated to a special fund established to provide emergency assistance to federal employees of NTEU-represented agencies impacted by Hurricane Katrina, the leader of the largest independent federal union announced today.

Within days of the hurricane that devastated the Gulf Coast region, the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) established, through the Federal Employees Education & Assistance (FEEA) Fund, a NTEU Hurricane Relief Fund to help any federal employee who works for any of the 30 federal agencies where NTEU represents employees.

Today NTEU President Colleen M. Kelley announced that the union will match the donated funds, up to $25,000. All funds donated to date will be included in the matching program.

“Federal employees have been first-line responders for millions of American in times of crisis,” Kelley said. “Federal workers are also citizens and sometimes become victims of the crisis themselves. I have watched with awe over the years the generosity and giving spirit of federal workers toward the American public and their fellow public servants and I am proud to stand with them in these times of need. Federal employees know that they can count on each other and their union for desperately needed support and assistance.”

NTEU is a founding member of FEEA which has provided millions of dollars in emergency relief funds to federal employees following many natural disasters, as well as the Oklahoma City bombing and the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11.

Federal employees in need of assistance because of Hurricane Katrina can call FEEA at 1-800-323-4140 or 303-933-7580. Assistance information is also available on the FEEA web site at www.feea.org by clicking on the Hurricane Relief button then following the link to the Disaster Relief Application (the last link).

Donations to the fund are also being accepted. Federal employees can donate online at www.feea.org, or by sending a check to: FEEA NTEU HURRICANE FUND, 8441 W. Bowles Avenue, Suite 200, Littleton, CO 80123-9501, or via credit card by calling FEEA at 303-933-7580. Donors must designate the “FEEA NTEU Fund” if they would like their contribution to be directed to a federal employee in an NTEU-represented agency and to be matched by NTEU.
