Washington, D.C.—For some 450 Maryland-based employees of the Financial Management Service (FMS) represented by the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU), the New Year brought some good news. The employees had faced a looming deadline to relocate to another state to keep their jobs.

Working with NTEU and Maryland’s House and Senate congressional delegation, the Treasury Department has put a hold on relocations until the end of 2019.

“I applaud the efforts of the Maryland congressional delegation in encouraging FMS to review and amend its plans concerning relocation,” said NTEU President Colleen M. Kelley. “I believe this adjustment in the FMS-Bureau of the Public Debt (BPD) consolidation plan is a good step for those dedicated employees who want to continue to serve in the D.C. metro area.”

Maryland Sens. Barbara Mikulski and Benjamin Cardin, along with Reps. Steny Hoyer, Donna Edwards, Chris Van Hollen, Elijah Cummings and John Sarbanes have taken the lead on raising concerns with the Treasury Department and exploring options that work for all involved.

“NTEU will continue to be deeply engaged in this process to ensure that the employees it represents at the Financial Management Service have their concerns addressed,” President Kelley said.

NTEU is the nation’s largest independent union of federal employees and represents 150,000 employees in 31 agencies and departments including 1,200 at FMS and 1,300 at BPD.
