Sept. 11 Anniversary Appropriate Time To Reflect On Contributions Of Federal Workers, NTEU’s Kelley Says

Press Release September 9, 2003

Washington, D.C.—As our nation prepares to mark the second anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans continue to look to the federal workforce for reassurance and stability, the leader of the nation’s largest independent union of federal employees said today.

“We join the rest of the nation in marking the anniversary of horrific events,” said President Colleen M. Kelley of the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU), “and we do so proud in the knowledge that federal employees have been unwavering in service to their fellow Americans.”

NTEU is the largest independent federal union, representing some 150,000 employees in 29 agencies and departments.

“It is clear that much has changed, in both America and around the world, since Sept. 11,” President Kelley said, pointing to elevated threat levels and warnings, along with stricter and more visible security in public places.

“Still,” she said, “the dedication and commitment to duty of federal employees remains what it always has been—unwavering. Their professionalism is unchanged. And their steady, dependable role in the life of their country is a reassuring constant.”

The NTEU leader called upon the public, and in particular the political leadership of the nation, to reflect upon and appreciate the important and continuing contributions of federal workers to the national well-being—and to translate that appreciation into actions that provide federal employees with the dignity and respect they earn and deserve.
