The national economic picture spelled out by President Obama last night shows clearly the magnitude of the task ahead for all of us. At the same time, the president was equally clear in his determination that Americans are up to that task, and that a brighter future is in the offing.

To that end, the public can and should have great confidence in the women and men of the federal workforce. These committed public servants consistently have served our nation, in good times and bad, with skill and dedication, and I have certainty they will do so again as we work together to restore meaning to the American dream.

I know first-hand, from working with and on behalf of federal employees, that each has in his or her mind during these difficult times the question of how, in the course of their work, they may help the president, the Congress and the public persevere and ultimately triumph. It is how they have responded to every crisis in our nation’s history, and will do so again.
