Statement of NTEU President Colleen M. Kelley On The Work of Sen. Sarbanes, Rep. Moran on Transit Legislation

Press Release August 3, 2005

The National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) applauds the instrumental work of Sen. Paul Sarbanes (D-MD) and Rep. James Moran (D-VA) in helping secure in the new highway and mass transit bill provisions that will benefit federal workers in the Washington, D.C. area. Both legislators are keenly aware of the traffic and travel problems in and around the Washington area. Their work on the transit bill led to extension to the legislative and judicial branches of statutory language designed to alleviate some of those problems by allowing thousands more federal workers to take advantage of a guaranteed tax-free financial incentive of up to $105 per month toward the cost of commuting on public transportation. Moreover, their work led to inclusion in the transit bill of NTEU-supported language that will allow federal agencies to operate a shuttle service for their employees. This is of particular importance to NTEU-represented employees in the Food and Drug Administration working in new facilities in White Oak, Maryland, who will be able to ride such a shuttle to an area Metro station. The work of Sen. Sarbanes and Rep. Moran on this important measure reflects their long-time support for federal workers and is appreciated by NTEU and those it represents.
