Statement of NTEU President Colleen M. Kelley On Bipartisan Letter Supporting Military-Civilian Pay Parity

Press Release May 16, 2006

NTEU strongly supports the bipartisan call, contained in a letter from 10 members of the House of Representatives to key House committee leaders, for a continuation of the tradition of civilian-military pay parity in 2007. The administration has proposed a 2.2 percent raise for federal civilian workers; the House has approved a 2007 raise of 2.7 percent for members of the military. The rationale contained in today’s bipartisan letter—namely, that members of the military and the federal civilian workforce both are integral to fulfilling the role of government for the American people—highlights the importance of pay parity. Both groups of federal employees are intimately involved in the fight against terrorism; both work to protect the security of our nation; and both work on behalf of all Americans. Civilian-military pay parity is a tradition that has served our nation well; NTEU will work to achieve that end again this year. The bipartisan letter sent to the chairmen and ranking members of the House Appropriations Committee and its Treasury, Transportation Subcommittee is an important step in that direction.
