Statement of NTEU President Colleen M. Kelley on House Subcommittee Approval of 3.5 Percent Military Pay Raise

Press Release May 9, 2007

Approval today by the House Armed Services Committee of a 3.5 percent pay raise in 2008 for members of the military is welcome recognition not just of the need for a fair pay raise, but of the importance of pay in recognizing the contributions of those who serve in the military.

NTEU strongly supports this raise, which is higher than the three percent raise proposed by the administration earlier this year and addresses in a modest manner the continuing military pay gap. As I have previously said, NTEU believes a minimum raise of 3.5 percent also should be provided for federal civilian employees in 2008, and will work with leaders and members of Congress to achieve that end for both groups of federal workers who serve our nation in different but equally vital ways.
