Statement of President Colleen M. Kelley on House Passage of H.R. 1

Press Release January 10, 2007

Congressional approval of H.R. 1 putting Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees on the same footing as other federal employees was welcomed by NTEU. Like other employees of the Department of Homeland Security, TSA employees should be afforded full civil service and collective bargaining rights. Unfortunately, these rights have been denied them since the creation of the agency. I commend the new congressional leadership and Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, for heeding NTEU’s call to include this provision in H.R. 1, and for Rep. Thompson’s leadership in obtaining House approval. NTEU will work closely with the Senate to ensure that TSA employees will finally have the same voice that Customs and Border Protection personnel and other DHS employees have in their workplace.
