Statement of President Colleen M. Kelley on Legislation to Increase Minimum Wage

Press Release January 11, 2007

It is gratifying to see the willingness of the new congressional leadership to address as a priority such a fundamental issue to working families as a long-overdue increase in the federal minimum wage. There are few aspects of life in our country that have as great an impact as a decent job at a living wage. Approval by the House of Representatives of H.R. 2, bringing the minimum wage up to $7.25 shows that the House understands the struggles of working Americans in making ends meet. This legislation should prove beneficial to lower-income federal employees when the government conducts local-area salary studies. NTEU calls for swift passage of this legislation in the Senate.
