Statement of President Colleen M. Kelley on Support for Pay Parity by Senate Budget Committee

Press Release March 27, 2009

In approving its 2010 budget resolution, I am pleased the Senate Budget Committee has expressed its support for the principle of parity in pay raises for military and federal civilian employees. The support expressed by the committee is evidence of the strong bipartisan congressional sentiment to retain this longstanding principle of federal pay. The Senate committee’s resolution says it “assumes there will be pay parity” for these two groups of federal employees. Earlier, the House Budget Committee approved its 2010 budget resolution containing language calling for such parity.

The important concept of military-civilian pay parity has been a critical element of federal pay policy for most of the past 20 years. Parity serves a number of important purposes, including sending a positive message to the federal civilian workforce that its continuing contributions to the public’s well-being are recognized.
