Strong, Vibrant Federal Workforce Critical to the Nation’s Future

Press Release November 5, 2014

Washington, D.C.—Following the midterm elections, the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) will carry on its efforts to advocate for strengthening the federal workforce and ensuring agencies have the resources to accomplish their missions on behalf of the American people.

“When our country is faced with a serious challenge, whether it is a global pandemic, a terrorist threat or an economic crisis, the federal workforce is called upon to take action,” said NTEU National President Colleen M. Kelley. “Our job is to ensure Congress understands the role of federal employees and provides the support and resources they need to be successful.”

“Every day the federal workforce tackles critical issues on behalf of Americans,” said Kelley. “NTEU will press Congress to treat them fairly and give them the resources they need to do their jobs.”

NTEU’s immediate priority is to protect federal employee interests during the lame-duck session later this month. It is critically important for Congress to pass a new funding bill to keep the government operational past Dec. 11, when the current budget measure expires. NTEU will focus its efforts on securing adequate funding for federal agencies.

“The last few years have been challenging ones for the federal workforce and I expect they will remain so,” said the NTEU president. “NTEU will work to protect federal employee retirement, seek fair and appropriate pay raises for federal workers and strongly advocate for adequate funding for federal agencies.”

During the 2014 election cycle, NTEU focused on Senate races and key House contests in states and districts where the union has substantial membership. NTEU’s activities included voter registration and education drives, canvassing and get-out-the-vote efforts.

NTEU is the largest independent federal union, representing 150,000 employees in 31 agencies and departments.
