NTEU Endorses Biden for President

Press Release July 20, 2020

Washington D.C. – The National Treasury Employees Union has endorsed Joe Biden for President of the United States.

The union, which represents about 150,000 frontline federal workers around the country, said Biden’s record as a public servant demonstrates a deep understanding of the civil service and a strong commitment to supporting and respecting federal employees.

“Joe Biden is exactly who federal employees need in the White House,” said NTEU National President Tony Reardon. “Throughout his career, Joe Biden has been an advocate of fair pay and benefits and giving frontline employees a meaningful voice in the federal workplace. As President, he would be a powerful advocate for providing federal agencies and employees with the resources they need to carry out their missions, including national security, public health, environmental protection, economic growth and consumer safety.”

Local and national NTEU leaders evaluated each candidate solely on issues affecting federal workers, including pay, benefits, agency funding, collective bargaining, workplace rights and engagement with NTEU on the union’s key issues.

“In the end, this was an easy decision for our NTEU leaders in every state and territory. Federal employees want a president who honors their service, pays them a fair wage and respects their integrity and professionalism. Joe Biden is the only choice,” Reardon said.

Biden has committed to making the federal government a role model for employers to treat their workers fairly, and he wants federal employees to be protected and rewarded for their hard work. He has spoken publicly about respecting and relying upon the expertise of career civil servants.

The three executive orders that President Trump signed in 2018 were a brazen attack on federal employees and their right to be represented by a union, and they violate the congressional finding that collective bargaining in the federal sector is in the public interest.

“Vice President Biden told me personally that he would rescind the federal workforce executive orders, which is the clearest possible example of how a Biden presidency would immediately improve the professional lives of federal employees,” Reardon said.

NTEU’s endorsement process includes an independent examination of each candidates’ record on federal employee issues; public statements; and input from local union leaders.

“No matter what agency they work for, we found NTEU leaders overwhelmingly support Joe Biden for president,” Reardon said. “These are the federal employees who voluntarily take on extra union duties, and they have dealt first-hand with the Trump administration’s workforce policies. Their support of Joe Biden means they are ready for a change in how the White House treats the federal workforce.”

NTEU represents about 150,000 employees at 33 federal agencies and departments.
